Sites like Adverts.ie: where to buy, sell and swap in Ireland
Adverts.ie has been part of Irish buying and selling for years. It's a familiar place to pick up a second-hand buggy, a bike or a sofa from someone down the road. But it isn't the only option, and depending on what you're selling, another site might suit you better.
This page compares the main places people in Ireland buy and sell second-hand: Adverts.ie, DoneDeal, Facebook Marketplace, Vinted and SellOrSwap.ie (that's us, so we've stuck to facts and linked our sources). Every site here does something well. The right one depends on what you're selling, how you want to be paid and whether you'd rather swap.
What Adverts.ie does well
- Free for most private sellers. Adverts.ie says that, apart from a few sections, "you can now sell anything on Adverts for free". Motor, shop, service, job and farming ads still pay fees (Adverts.ie help).
- Simple, chronological listings. Ads show newest first in their category. You can pay to "bump" an ad back to the top: a Priority Bump costs €2–€4 for 3 days and a Premium Bump €3–€6 for 7 days, depending on category. An ad that hasn't been bumped for 30 days gets a free bump (Adverts.ie help).
- Swap and wanted ads. Adverts.ie's own category pages describe themselves as "anything and everything for sale, swap or wanted in Ireland" (category meta description, checked 17 Oct 2026, e.g. adverts.ie/for-sale/dublin/).
- Vehicle ads are cheap. Private vehicle listing fees run from €3 (Basic, under €2,000) to €10 (Premium, €4,000 or more) (Adverts.ie help).
What to know: deals usually happen offline, in cash or by transfer. If something goes wrong, Adverts.ie asks you to email its support team and contact the Gardaí. If you paid by PayPal, you can raise a PayPal dispute (Adverts.ie help).
The other options
DoneDeal is the big name for cars and farming, and it has a general marketplace too. Most ads stay up for 72 days (some sections 30). Lite, Standard and Premium bundles add automatic bumps and a 5-day Spotlight. Exact prices are shown on the Place Ad screen and vary by section (DoneDeal help; bundles). If you're selling a car, see our guide to selling a car in Ireland.
Facebook Marketplace is free to list and sell locally, and it has a huge audience because almost everyone already has an account. Our research found no checkout or delivery option for Ireland, so deals are arranged in Messenger and paid in person (based on our 12 Oct 2026 research, which cites Facebook Help and Shopify Ireland; not re-checked on 17 Oct because Facebook pages need a login).
Vinted is built for clothes and accessories (and more categories now). Selling is free. Buyers pay a mandatory Vinted fee, "usually 5% + €0.70", and shipping. Sellers post with a prepaid label and are paid once the buyer confirms everything's OK (Vinted price list, updated 5 Oct 2026; How it works). There's more in our Sites like Vinted in Ireland guide.
SellOrSwap.ie is an Irish marketplace where every ad can be for sale, for swap, or both. It covers everything from phones to furniture, in all 26 counties. Here's what's different:
- Swaps are part of every deal. Sellers can switch on "accept swaps". A buyer can then offer one of their own items instead of cash, or an item plus cash. Swaps with no cash, or with cash paid in person, are free. If the cash part is paid by card in the app, whoever adds the cash pays a swap fee of €2 or 3% of the cash part, whichever is greater. The other person can accept, decline or counter.
- Free to list, free to swap, free for cash in person. Posting a normal ad, swaps with no cash, freebies and cash-in-person sales cost nothing (our pricing).
- Card payments with Buyer Protection. When you pay by card in the app, the money is held until the handover code is confirmed. Posted items release automatically after 7 days, and opening a dispute pauses the release. We step in if the item never arrives or is significantly not as described (our terms). Buyer Protection costs the buyer 6% + €0.99, capped at €60. Sellers are paid after each sale, with no minimum payout, and the seller pays 2% of the item price on card sales, taken from the payout. Cash in person costs the seller nothing.
- ID Verified badge. An optional €2 check (passport or driving licence plus a selfie, run by Didit). The badge only appears when the check passes.
- Scam Shield. Chat is checked automatically for common scam patterns, like requests to pay outside the app, and you're shown a warning. It only warns: nobody reads your chats because of it (privacy notice).
- Safe meeting spots. The app suggests busy public places near you for the handover (safety tips).

Which one should you use?
- Selling a car or a tractor? DoneDeal has the biggest motors audience in Ireland. Adverts.ie and SellOrSwap.ie are cheaper places to list as well.
- Clearing out clothes you'll post? Vinted is built for that. SellOrSwap.ie lets you sell or swap them, locally or by post.
- Selling something bulky to someone nearby? Adverts.ie, Facebook Marketplace and SellOrSwap.ie all work well for collection.
- Would rather swap than sell? That's what SellOrSwap.ie was built for. Pop "accept swaps" on and see what people offer.
Plenty of people list in more than one place, and that's fine. Wherever you sell, the same rules keep you safe: meet somewhere busy, check the item before you pay, and never pay by bank transfer to someone you haven't met.
