Vinted vs SellOrSwap.ie: an honest comparison

If you've sold clothes online in Ireland, there's a good chance you've used Vinted. It's popular for good reason: listing is quick, selling is free and the prepaid labels make posting easy. So why would you look at SellOrSwap.ie as well?

The short answer: they're built for slightly different things. Vinted is a fashion-first app built around posting. SellOrSwap.ie is an Irish marketplace for everything, where you can sell, swap, or do a bit of both, locally or by post. Here's a fair, side-by-side look, with sources for every Vinted fact.

What they have in common

• Free to list. Neither charges you to post an ad for clothes (Vinted; SellOrSwap pricing).
• In-app payments with protection. On Vinted, purchases made with "Buy now" are covered by its refund policy (Vinted). On SellOrSwap.ie, when you pay by card in the app, the money is held until the handover code is confirmed. Posted items release automatically after 7 days, and opening a dispute pauses the release (terms).

Where they differ

1. Who pays, and how much

• Vinted: sellers pay nothing to sell. Buyers pay a mandatory Vinted fee, "usually 5% + €0.70", VAT included, plus shipping (price list, updated 5 Oct 2026).
• SellOrSwap.ie: cash in person and swaps with no cash are free for everyone. If the buyer pays by card in the app, they pay Buyer Protection of 6% + €0.99, capped at €60 (pricing). Swaps with no cash, or with cash paid in person, are free. If the cash part is paid by card in the app, whoever adds the cash pays a swap fee of €2 or 3% of the cash part, whichever is greater. Sellers are paid after each sale, with no minimum. On card sales the seller pays 2% of the item price, taken from the payout; cash-in-person sales cost the seller nothing.

To be straightforward about it: on a card sale, SellOrSwap.ie's Buyer Protection fee is a higher percentage than Vinted's typical buyer fee, though ours is capped at €60. Where we're different is that cash in person and swaps with no cash cost nothing, and there's no fee at all if you'd rather meet up.

2. Swapping

• Vinted: we couldn't find a swap feature on Vinted's own pages as of 17 Oct 2026.
• SellOrSwap.ie: swapping is built in. Sellers switch on "accept swaps", and buyers can offer one or more of their own items, or items plus cash. You can accept, decline or counter, and each swap offer shows a Fair, Good deal or Great deal rating to help you weigh it up.

3. What you can sell

• Vinted: fashion first, with other categories added over time (How it works).
• SellOrSwap.ie: 27 categories, from Phones & Tablets and Gaming to Home & Furniture, Baby & Kids, Cars & Motors and Free stuff, plus Home Swap for council and housing association tenants.

4. Getting it to the buyer

• Vinted: prepaid shipping labels. Drop the parcel off within 5 days (How it works).
• SellOrSwap.ie: collection, meet at a safe place, local delivery, or post with An Post. The buyer pays the postage the seller sets, and the seller posts it themselves with An Post or any courier. The app also suggests busy public meeting spots near you.

5. Trust tools

• Vinted: refunds if an item doesn't arrive, is damaged or is significantly not as described, reported within 2 days of delivery (How it works).
• SellOrSwap.ie: an optional ID Verified badge (a €2 passport or driving licence check with a selfie, via Didit). Scam Shield warnings in chat when someone asks you to pay outside the app. Reviews after each deal (privacy notice, safety tips).

6. Paid visibility

• Vinted: optional Bumps and Showcase (price list).
• SellOrSwap.ie: optional bumps: €1.99 for 24 hours, €3.99 for 7 days (pricing).

So which should you use?

• Lots of clothes to post to people all over the country? Vinted's audience and prepaid labels are hard to beat.
• Want to swap, sell locally for cash with no fee, or sell things that aren't clothes? SellOrSwap.ie was built for that.
• Can't decide? Many people list in both. There's no rule against it. Just remember to mark an item sold in one place when it goes in the other.
